Description

Ball Four is a classic climbing card game with a light baseball theme and one sharp twist. Each inning, players are dealt cards and take turns leading legal set-based hands such as pairs, two pair, triples, full houses, four of a kind, double triples, four plus triple, and double four. As in traditional climbing games, a hand may only be beaten by a higher hand of the same type. If you pass, you are out until the current play ends. The signature move is Ball Four. When the current high hand contains exactly three cards of a rank, a player holding the fourth card of that rank may play it face up as Ball Four. If the underlying hand is not beaten, Ball Four wins the play, gives that player the next lead, and costs that player 2 runs at the end of the inning. If the underlying hand is beaten, Ball Four fails, returns to hand, and costs nothing. When a player empties their hand, the inning ends. That player scores 1 run for each card left in opponents’ hands. Each successful Ball Four played during the inning is worth minus 2 runs to the player who used it. Play continues until one player reaches 50 runs or 9 innings have been played. —description from the designer
