Description

The fundamental concept of this game is to defeat the opponent by capturing and intercepting their pieces, and to place the Fortress Commander in "checkmate" by completely encircling him—thereby deciding the outcome of the game. The encircled opponent must surrender in defeat, and the game is over. The pieces are identical in type and number for each opponent; they are designated and labeled as follows: 1 Fortress Commander (FK), 2 Generals (G), 2 Dispatch Riders (M), 2 Aircraft (F), 2 Airships (L), 2 Howitzers (H), 5 Soldiers (S), 2 Bombardiers (B). Players take turns making a move; during their turn, each player may — provided it is possible and in accordance with the specific rules governing each piece — capture any of the opponent's pieces (i.e., remove it from the board and occupy its square), though they are not obliged to do so. The Fortress Commander, too, is permitted to capture pieces; however, he himself cannot be captured—instead, whenever he is under threat of capture, "Check" is called.
