Description
MAREVO is a tabletop role-playing game of folk-horror mystery set in an indifferent city. Inspired by "Supernatural", "Grimm" and post-punk vibes, this game reimagines urban fantasy and mystery adventures. Ukrainian folklore stirs to life between crumbling panel blocks, brutalist monuments, and overgrown parks where the streetlights haven't worked in years. In MAREVO, one person takes on the Game Master (GM) role, while others are Players. Players create their in-fiction characters — detectives working for the government to investigate grotesque cases — while the GM creates the Case they will investigate. Player characters must stop the Disaster that stems from supernatural beings (called the Others) carrying out their plans. The modified Rooted in Trophy engine is a perfect match for a game designed for short, high-stakes campaigns of decaying dreams and social horror. You play by having a dialogue between the players and GM. GM describes the situation around player characters. The players then describe their characters' actions in this situation. Every risky action a character takes requires the player to roll 1–4 dice, defined as light- and dark-colored. Then, the player looks for the highest value. The dark dice represent the toll this job takes on a character; therefore, if a dark die is the highest value, the character takes additional stress. Although characters could fail or succeed at stopping the Disaster, players "win" by creating a fun and interesting story, regardless of the ending they achieve. —description from the designer
