Description

In 710, Emperor Shōmu ordered the construction of the Tōdai-ji in Nara, a colossal project that would forever change the face of Japan. To raise the world’s largest wooden temple and cast the Great Buddha in bronze, vast amounts of timber, metal, and labor were mobilized, plunging the empire into an unprecedented economic crisis.
