Khartoum has fallen and General Gordon is dead. The mission to relieve him had failed but was instructed to keep going and take the river port of Berber. Once they reached Kirbekan, the British Commander in Chief, General Earle, decided that the three hills that overlooked the Nile needed to be cleared of Mahdists, the hills were known as the Koppies.
