🏳️‍🌈 Why it’s here

What we found
  • Queer themes
    According to the game’s rulebook
“bodies, titles, names, identities, clothes and other old world concepts have become detached from their previously gendered social narratives, allowing for some truly chaotic forms of everyday presentation and expression”
  • Tagged queer by its creator
According to the creator’s own tags on itch.io
    “itch.io tags: lgbt, queer”

🤝 Inclusive design Inclusive design is separate from a game’s queer labels. It marks games whose design is deliberately inclusive even when not queer-themed: romance or marriage mechanics with no gender constraint, character creation without a forced gender binary, gender-neutral rules language, or table safety tools. Each marker shows where we found it.

  • Character creation free of a gender binary
    According to the game’s rulebook
“Characters can use any combination of pronoun sets, including neopronouns or choosing to have no pronouns.”
  • Safety tools (X-card, lines & veils, session zero)
    According to the game’s rulebook
“Characters can use any combination of pronoun sets, including neopronouns or choosing to have no pronouns.”

Description

Introduction: At its core Beyond the Breeze is a roleplaying game about a group of young people and the fragile ‘utopian’ community they are part of building. They lead mostly quiet lives and make memories in their own ways, many while scavenging for relics from an era the world has since left behind. Here, the culture of violence and capital that doomed the old world has long since been bled away by time, leaving us to pick up the pieces and build something better. We are past the need for the felling of empires, instead our greatest enemies are the pitfalls of youthful ambition, everyday emotions, the naïve desire to codify utopia and the lingering memories and half-forgotten stories of a world our forebearers promised us they had destroyed… The Toolkit: We wrote beyond the Breeze the Breeze as a GMless collaborative toolkit that consists of a number of interconnected minigames used to create a community, fill it with intrigue and tell the stories of the young and idealistic characters within. While originally written to tell stories about maintaining one of the many communities in the haunted post-post-apocalyptic adolescent ‘‘utopia’’ that is the Salvation Archipelago the mechanics of most games are flexible enough to be adapted for any setting you wish to explore. This toolkit was developed with time limits and accessibility in mind and the gameplay is structured in a way that ensures players don’t feel pressured to do ‘homework’ outside of sessions. Almost all planning and world building is built into the game and should happen while you’re at the table. Each of the minigames can be broken up into shorter segments and uses simple resources; notebooks, paper, pencils and a deck of cards to provide randomization and track gameplay progress. This way the games can easily be adapted for online play using a shared google doc, an unmodified version of roll20 etc…
