Description
It is the hot, wet summer before your final year of university. There’s chaos magic in the air, sparks of revolution and self-revelation every other week. Your best friend writes a sleep deprived six-thousand word rant about the game The Beginner’s Guide, Rothko, Brexit, Kanye West, and his first attempt to understand his childhood traumas. It's a hot mess. I promised I’d help a friend out a few years ago by finally getting this out there. They’d been sitting on it for a long time and didn’t know what to do with it, so I said I’d take a crack at trying to cut things down and adding context where it was needed. They gave me some general instructions for how to approach it, but it was much more of a job than I imagined. They’ve been missing for a couple of years now. It was sad at the time, but since they’ve been gone I’ve just had this gnawing feeling that it was wrong to not get this out there somehow. I can’t answer all your questions, I barely know what’s happening here. It’s a hot mess. There’s several distinct authorial voices, I’m not sure it comes to any conclusion, and there’s a thread about it actually being a game, but there’s no rules or any way to play. Anyway, I hope someone gets something out of this. It's probably interesting to you if you liked The Beginner's Guide, Melancholy Island, A Collection of Improving Exercises, or if you like experimental literary and lyric games.
